Any dark shadows are on the photo only, the map is in very fine beautiful condition. Gorgeous, a very fine masterpiece of cartography, produced by the legendary cartographer Victor Levasseur. This kind of sort of very decorative map would frame and display nicely in a kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom and so forth. Levasseur produced some of the most beautiful and attractive maps ever made in the world history of cartography. These are his finest maps. Superb antique 1856 handcolored map, titled Dept. De La Vendee. The map is very finely printed on thick paper, with no printing on reverse. The beautiful handcoloring on the map is period, his is before color printing. Surrounding the main map image are absolutely superb detailed engravings, related to these areas. The engravings are very finely detailed and attractive, a superb example of the lost art of the engraver. They show animals, foliage, various ethnic groups of this area, dressed in period clothing, engaged in daily activites and so forth, some allegorical figures related to these areas , daily life and living, agricultural, maritime, business and industry, manufacturing, history, products produced in this area and more, with detailed text charts related to this area as well. The text charts are titled things like Division-Administration, Territoire, Curiosites, Celebrites,, and more. The map is from the very rare and important Atlas National, produced in Paris France in 1856. The map is in excellent condition, and would frame and display beautifully.
