PREFACE

This work is issued with the design of supplying veryimportant omissions in the author's antecedent writingsand compilations. His most fervid acknowledgmentsare due for the great encouragement accorded to hisprevious efforts, and the favorable opinions expressed regarding them. The result has been that, stimulated bythe experience of the past, he has, in the present work, made special exertions to present an immense array ofrare and most valuable information relating to Commerce and the Industrial Arts. The vital concerns ofhealth, home, domestic felicity, and other all-importantinterests, have also received due attention, and to makethe information more comprehensive and complete, hehas quoted largely from his previously published works, wherever he judged it necessary to do so. These extractsinclude a few items for machinists' use, and the diagrams for saw-filing, selected from the "Boston Machinist" and Halley's work "On Saw-filing," by permission ofthe publishers, John Wiley & Son, of New York, togetherwith a extracts from the "Watchmakers' Manual," permission of the Publishers, Jesse Haney & Co, New York.In addition to the matter above alluded to, many valuabletable are now published for the first time, together withmuch new and most important matter specially adapted forthe use of commercial, manufacturing, and mechanical menin both hemispheres. A past experience of many years devoted to the welcome task of supplying technical information to business men, mechanics, &c., has qualified theauthor to judge regarding their wants, and to act intelligently in endeavoring to supply them. His effort has beento act as the harbinger of mechanical improvements andgeneral progress, and he can say without ostentation, thatthe present work is the result of prolonged and continuouslabor ; the best authorities have been consulted, and and endeavors have been made to make it plain, easily understood, and commensurate with the exacting requirements of this progressive age.
