U.S. Political cartoon about finding a Republican presidential candidate in 1880 / Sam Loyd 14-15 Puzzle1880 Presidential Puzzle / \"Mechanical Orguinette\" imprint Music Box (see NOTE below) - Authentic Original Antique Victorian Advertising Trade Card The 15-puzzle (also called Gem Puzzle, Boss Puzzle, Game of Fifteen, Mystic Square and many others) is a sliding puzzle that consists of a frame of numbered square tiles in random order with one tile missing. The puzzle also exists in other sizes, particularly the smaller 8-puzzle. If the size is 3×3 tiles, the puzzle is called the 8-puzzle or 9-puzzle, and if 4×4 tiles, the puzzle is called the 15-puzzle or 16-puzzle named, respectively, for the number of tiles and the number of spaces. The object of the puzzle is to place the tiles in order by making sliding moves that use the empty space.Sam Loyd claimed from 1891 until his death in 1911 that he invented the puzzle, for example writing in the Cyclopedia of Puzzles (published 1914): \"The older inhabitants of Puzzleland will remember how in the early seventies I drove the entire world crazy over a little box of movable pieces which became known as the \'14-15 Puzzle\'.\"[12] However, Loyd had nothing to do with the invention or initial popularity of the puzzle, and in any case the craze was in 1880, not the early 1870s. Loyd\'s first article about the puzzle was published in 1886 and it was not until 1891 that he first claimed to have been the inventor. (Wikipedia)

NOTE: \"Organettes\" (from www) The Organette was a mechanical free-reed instrument first manufactured in the late 1870s by several companies such John McTammany of Cambridge MA, the Autophone Company of Ithaca NY, the Automatic Organ Co of Boston MA, E.P. Needham & Sons of New York NY, J.M. Draper of London England, Paul Ehrlich & Co. of Leipzig Germany, and The Mechanical Orguinette Co. of New York NY as well as other manufacturers worldwide. Organettes were the first mechanical musical instruments to allow for a wide range of music to be played at will. In 1876, the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia included a small number of self-playing musical instruments from different manufacturers and different countries, and so was probably the first occasion on which a real mechanical musical industry may be said to have existed. Thereafter, a number of companies began to manufacture and sell table-top organettes at the end of the 1870s. Some used perforated cardboard disks, others small, wooden barrels known as cobs, but the majority played cardboard music rolls with a range of fourteen or more notes. This style \'E\' orguinette from the Mechanical Orguinette Company included spools at each end, which made the rolls easier to play accurately and to re-roll after use.The organette (or orguinette) used rolls of perforated paper, perforated cardboard, perforated metal disks and wooden rollers (or \"cobs\") on which the music was recorded. Musical scales ranged from 14 to 39 notes depending on the instrument\'s complexity. Air pressure or vacuum was produced by hand-, crank- or foot-operated mechanical bellows. The organette was compact and affordable with large selections of music available. Various patents credit Henry Bishop Horton (1819-1885; co-founder of the Ithaca Calendar Clock Co), John McTammany (1845-1915), Paul Ehrlich[ and others with inventing the organette. The organette\'s popularity declined as the phonograph was introduced and became more affordable.
