Antique 18th C Wrought Iron Hanging Candle Holder Loom Light Early Lighting Aafa:
15 1/2" Long 2 1/2" extension
Lovely example of a mid to late 18th century loom light in wonderful original condition.
All hand forged, blacksmith made, this circa 1750-1780 example showcases excellent signs of craft and is more than likely New England in origin, though this style of design shows up in Pennslyvania culture during the period as well.
The original blacksmith who created this piece made a hanging candle holder by expertly forming iron into a bottom candle cup.
Hanging candleholders such as this would have been kept at various locations in an early home, hung from lamp support spikes, over door frames, off the backs of ladder back chairs, etc. One such location was also off a weaving loom, this style of light bears its namesake as lore has it that young women would work their looms into the evening by the illumination of the single socketed candleholder.
There is some slight pitting to the wrought iron from age, but overall the piece is in fine condition with solid structural support.
Just a great piece of early New England colonial era lighting as seen referenced in numerous volumes on the subject of period interior furnishings.
