Late Victorian Chester H'm Sterling Silver Novelty Shape Sewing Needle or Pin Cushion dated 1901
This Antique Novelty Shape Sewing Needle or Pin Cushion measures approximately 1 3/8 inches or 35 mm across the widest part of the chair from side to side by 1 3/8 inches or 35 mm across the depth of the chair from back to front and it stands 2 5/8 inches or 67 mm tall to the top of the chair back.
The sewing needle or pin cushion is made from sterling silver in the novelty form of a miniature chair that has a shaped back panel and it stands on four Queen Ann style legs, the chair back has been superbly raised relief and engrave decorated with a central scene of a young man in period dress that is relaxing in the country and this scene has a stylized floral, scroll and foliate decorated outer border, the legs and upper rail have also been embossed or raised relief decorated with scrolls, flowers and foliage and the chair has a padded green material covered needle or pin cushion as its seat that has a red leather like lining on its underside, the chair has Not beenengraved witha previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the left side rail has been impressed with a full set ofEnglish sterlingsilver hallmarksthat readas follows,
W.R - Lion Passant- Three Wheat Sheaves - stylized B
W.R is the Sheffield silversmith or makers mark of William Redfern, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterlingsilver, the Three Wheat Sheaves is the mark of the Chester assay office and the stylized letter B isthe date letterfor 1901.
The rarity of this antique sewing needle or pin cushion is not just in its novelty shape but also in the fact that it has been impressed with a Chester hallmark, the Chester assay office was closed in August 1962 and pieces that bear this mark have become harder to find as they are more desirable to the serious collector.
Thecondition is used and Excellent for its age.
TheMiniature Chair has No Large Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I canfind, the chair stands straight, the definition and decoration are very crisp, the needle or pin cushion is in excellent condition with no holes and no tares, the silver hallmark is still clearlylegible although as this novelty shape sewing needle or pin cushion is aused antiqueit does have some wear to the surface of the material covered cushion and it has the odd tiny shallow dent in the body that is so small it is hardly worth mentioning, it has some extremely minor surface marks and wear to the silver body from use along with thepatina of age that is to be expectedanda gentle clean would notgo amiss.Personally I think that this antique novelty shape sewing needle or pin cushion can still be used today and that it would make a superb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it's over 110 yearsold.
This Superb Quality Late Victorian Chester Hallmarked Sterling Silver Novelty Shape Sewing Needle or Pin Cushion dated 1901 is one of several pieces of antique and collectable silver that I have also listed.
