antique 19C Victorian GAME PIE DISH CHICKS & EGGS LID Wedgwood style Caneware

Please scroll down to see all pics. NOTE: Some pics reading too light.

A fantastic antique, 19C Victorian, game pie dish having a delightful figural grouping of chicks hatching out of eggs on the lid. Bunches of wheat at the chicks feet. The ornate lid sits upon a basket weave dish having a 2 part bottom tray, the outside ring of which repeats the wheat motif. These hatching chicks are alarmingly sweet & very detailed. I believe the eggs &chicks on the may have been originally painted in some manner, of course that was over 100 years ago and only the black eyes retain some paint and traces of toning on the lid. Dish looks and displays beautifully just the way it is.

Unglazed bas relief finish on game pie dishes was pioneered by Wedgwood and is referred to as caneware. Coloring of clay on this piece is lighter and a more creamy clay color than a Wedgwood pie dish I recently had.

Impressed maker's mark "W W&S , 182 "on bottom.

Dish has a few discreet old chips which I will describe. The dish displays beautifully and these minor chips are not distracting visually.

There are a few very minor shallow nicks or chips on the inside edge of basket edge. Likewise along the inner edge of the wheat adorned tray ring there are some very minor shallow chips. No repairs.

Measures approx. 8-1/2" w. across basket top edge (9-1/2" across bottom tray ring) x 7-1/2" t. to top of standing chick.

Original liner not present, I would think there was one originally, liners are often not found with the dishes.

Fantastic Victorian game pie delight.

Double boxed for safe travel.

BEAR IN MIND PARCEL IS SLOWER THAN PRIORITY, it can take up to 2 weeks for delivery, but it CAN be substantially lower in price. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts" - US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior. I am not responsible for a timely delivery due to varying International customs delays.
