We recently attended an Estate sale in Pennsylvania where we acquired two gorgeous 19th century Nantucket Lightship Swing Handle Baskets. We have sold a few Nantucket baskets over the years, but not from the 1800\'s and especially not in this fine of condition! We will be listing them both separately so don\'t miss out on your chance to win a piece of Antique American Folk Art. GOOD LUCK!
In this sale we have the first of two Estate found 19th century Nantucket Lightship baskets. Our first swing handle basket measures approx. 8\" tall with a 8-1/2\" diameter and was possibly created on the South Shoal Lightship. Tiny square nails line the rim and a circle pattern is found etched into the wood at the bottom of the basket. The overall condition is great, we did find four small breaks to the weave on the outside, a few to the inside and minor wear to the base. Be sure to see all our photos for specifics. This basket has stood the test of time and tells of the quality of the Nantucket. A wonderful patina to the wood, simply fabulous! Nantucket Lightship Baskets from wiki
Nantucket Lightship Baskets are a type of basket originating, in the 19th century, on Nantucket Island Lightships. Lightship baskets are all made from rattan and wood, have an odd number of staves, a solid wooden base, a nailed and lashed rim, a rattan weaver, and are woven over a mould. Oak, Pine, and Ash are the most traditional type of wood used on baskets, but today many other types are utilized such as cherry and ebony. Often modern Lightship Baskets incorporate multiple types of wood.
Baskets began being made on Nantucket Island by Native Americans of the Wampanoag Nation; these were generally of the splint type, and bear little resemblance to Nantucket Lightship Baskets. Nevertheless, these early baskets may have inspired later basket makers on Nantucket and aboard the lightships. The earliest form of basket made by white settlers on Nantucket, originated on whaleships in the early 1800s. These baskets were made free form (without a mould) and are thus only vaguely similar to later Lightship Baskets. These baskets, however, do begin to show early principles of Lightship Basket design, often incorporating a solid wooden base and a rattan weaver. The inspiration is thought to be based upon barrel manufacture due to the similar nature of a solid base and wooden staves. The utilization of rattan in basket making is most likely due to whalers picking up the material while sailing in the South Pacific.
The first true Lightship Baskets were made in the mid- to late 1800s aboard the Lightship stationed on the Nantucket Shoals. The first Lightship Station on the Nantucket Island Shoal was established in June 1854 and crewed by six men. Deployments aboard the Lightship often lasted for 30 days and the crewmembers generally had little to do. The earliest Lightship Baskets begin appearing in the 1860s and are generally of more utilitarian form. The first purse style basket with a lid was made by Lightship Captain Charles Ray (1798–1884), and is relatively similar to the type sold today. Lightship basket bases, rims, and staves tended to be made on-island, with lightship crewmembers bringing these items on board the ship to do the actual weaving, and help pass the time. The moulds were originally made from old cut-up ships\' masts. According to the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum, some of these early Lightship Basket makers included: “Captain Davis Hall, Captain Andrew Sandsbury, Roland Folger, Thomas W. Barrallay, William D. Appleton, George W. Ray, Charles F. Ray, Joe Fisher, Charlie Sylvia, SB Raymond and Isaac Hamblin.” Lightship Baskets stopped being made on board the Nantucket lightships in 1900, when the government stopped allowing crewmembers to spend time doing so. The process continued on Nantucket Island. José Formoso Reyes began making the first true lightship basket purses in the 1940s, calling them “Friendship Baskets” after learning the craft from Captain Charles Ray’s grandson Mitchel Ray. Charlie Sayles, Sr. is credited with creating the original Iv*ry Whale adornment for a basket top in the 1940s, a practice that is ubiquitous today. ONE - Who We Deal With
We sell and ship world wide to anywhere, so please email us for a quote to wherever you happen to be.
TWO - Shipping Charges
We charge shipping based on the USPS system, we will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials, normally that is $2.00 for regular sized packages. For small flat items $1.00. That covers the expense of boxes, envelopes, bubble wrap, peanuts, (We only use new packing materials, life is too short to scrounge through dumpsters). For larger items that take a larger more expensive box, we charge a little more, to cover the special box, example paintings or lamps. For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (Build a crate, wrap a zillion things individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the sale ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did. In other words WE NEVER GOUGE OUR CLIENTS SHIPPING COSTS!!
THREE - International Shipping
We charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number two above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $50 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. There is no tracking available on First Class Mail.
FOUR - Insurance
\'s policies no longer allows us to charge the client for insurance. But... we still apply insurance to any item that goes over $27.00 in value. We reserve the right to use the insurance carrier of our choice. Sometimes that is Postal or the Carrier\'s Insurance and sometimes that is a private insurance company such as DSI or U-PIC/Shipsurance. If we use a private insurance company the package will not be marked insured, but it will be.
FIVE - Methods of Payment Accepted
We aoffere by \'s rules and try and stay abreast of their changes. We accept Paypal. Paypal also accepts the major credit cards, or we also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CARTE BLANCHE, DINERS CLUB, JCB) Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.
SIX - Time Frame To Pay
We ask all sales to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on )
SEVEN - Shipping Time Frame
We make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are home schooling the boys, listing tons of items, and as like any of us are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our response, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.
EIGHT - Local Pickup
Sometimes it makes sense to come by and pickup your items. Sometimes an item is just too big for any other option. If you\'ve arranged local pickup with us, you must pickup the item within 30 days otherwise it will be subject to storage fees or relisting.
