Antique 19th C. Islamic Art Mamluk Brass Silver Ewer Aftaba Basin Vase No Quran:
$810

A very rare complete 19th C. Mamluke revival ewer and basin set. The pieces are completely original to one another and complement each other well. The decoration work on both is of very fine quality with good detailing and a nice original antique patina on the silver and the brass inlays.

Mamluke revival arts developed in the 1840s in Egypt and were in many cases interpretations of older Mamluk designs by Western architects and designers. The first Mamluk revival structure, Jazire Palace in Cairo, was built by Austrian architect Julius Franz.

The largest work on the topic was the illustrated work of Prisse D'Avennes in 1877 and was a primary catalyst for reintroducing this style to the late Otytoman Empire. Local artisans began to produce items like this well made and aesthetically appealing ewer and basin set to fulfill the growing demand for this style of work.

See the pictures for some beautiful examples of Mamluke Revival lithographs in the book " L'Art arabe d'après les monuments du Kaire depuis le VIIe siècle jusqu'à la fin du XVIIIe par Prisse d'Avennes"

This is a rare chance to own a piece of similar quality to this illustrated in that reference work. Overall hight 25". Ewer 18" is the oldest calligraphic form of the various Arabic scripts and consists of a modified form of the old Nabataean script. Its name is derived from the city of Kufa, Iraq, although it was known in Mesopotamia at least 100 years before the foundation of Kufa. At the time of the emergence of Islam, (Kufa, established in 18 AH (= 639 AD) by order of Omar bin al-Khattab) this type of script was already in use in various parts of the Arabian Peninsula. It was in this script that the first copies of the Qur'an were written." - Wikipedia
