Antique 19th C Large Mocha Ware Blue Seaweed Pattern Ale Jug 8 1/2 in High Rare DescriptionHere we have a superb and rare sized example of Victorian mocha ware. This ale jug stands 8 1/2 inches high and has a base diameter of 6 1/4inches.It dates from around 1860 and the large size means it was most likely used in a tavern or inn as a beer or ale jug.Mocha Ware is so-called because it resembled the natural geological markings on moss agate known as mocha stone. An unknown potter discovered that by dripping a coloured acidic solution into wet alkaline slip on a pot body, the colour would instantly ramify into the dendritic ( tree-like or branching) random markings. This fitted into the tradition of imitating geological surfaces prevalent in the potteries of the mid-19th Century. The jug has a buff coloured body and there are bands of cream - the central one having the attractive blue coloured seaweed like decoration. There are also black bands around the body. It is a very handsome and impressive piece and despite some damage, it displays well and would make a great addition to any collection of this most attractive type of pottery. The jugweighs 1440g unpacked so a heavy and substantial piece. Please take a look at my other antiques listed for sale this week, including more ceramics.PLEASE VIEW MY OTHERITEMS FOR SALE THIS WEEK.Add me to your favourites
