Antique 19th C. Lesgi Caucasian Kasak Rug (8.0 X 3.9) For Sale
This fabulous antique Lesgi Star CaucasianKasakrug was made in the late 19th century in the southwest Caucasus. This is a very well made Lesgi design Kasak rug with high quality wool knots and red warp and weft wool foundation. Generally speaking the Lesghi star design originated in the northEastern Caucasus in the province of Lesghistan which is very close to Daghestan. However, by the time this rug was woven the design devise was employed throughout the region. I believe that this rug is actually a Kasak with a Lesghi star design. Note that the traditional Lesghi star design consists of a star that has eight points with four outwardly radiating arrows which originate from the corners of the star. Note that this rug is missing the four arrows. Additionally, this rug employs the hooked lozenge in the center of the star as well as in the field. The traditional Lesghi design would not employ the lozenges especially in the center of the star. Hooked lozenges are traditionally used in Kasak rugs. Another oddity for a Lesghi rug is the choice for the border motif. The arrow design employed is more characteristically seen in rugs woven in the Kasak region. Also the structure of the rug appears to my untrained eye to be from the Kasak area and not typical of the rugs which originate for either Lesghistan or for that matter Daghestan which also employed the Lesghi design. This is a very powerful design which is rendered in eye catching contrasting colors. It is the kind of rug which any collector would be thrilled to own. The rug is extremely attractive. Rising out of the Aqua blue field are three large eight pointed Lesgi stars with strongly notched red outlines and sky blue inner fields. Hooked lozenges in red and blue lie in the center of each star and smaller eight point stars at the corners guard the lozenges. The aqua blue field contains lozenges, stars, diamonds, stylized flower pedals as well 'S' designs. The condition of this rug is very good for its age, with short even pile, and with original ends and salvages complete and secure. There does not appear to be any major repairs mostly adding pile as needed. There are no holes, stains or oder but there is some oxidation of the browns allowing the foundation to become slightly visible in some areas. This rug is truely beautiful and definitely worth adding to a collection. Unfortunately the pictures don't do this rug justice for it is much more beautiful in real life. It seems that with the flash it adds entirely to much color and without the flash the rug appears pale and lifeless. Believe me, this rug is NOT pale and lifeless. This wonderful rug is part of my private collection and is priced to sell quickly. All reasonable offers will be seriously considered. PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER RUGS FROM MY COLLECTION. I will be adding more rugs weekly. Please Note: I am not a dealer. I am a collector. Due to economic conditions I am liquidating a large number of my rugs. I am not an authority on rugs. I try to describe the type and quality as well as the general condition of the rug as best as I can. If you have specific questions please feel free to enquire. I do not accept returns so it is always best to inquire before you offer so that you know what you are offerding on and will be happy with your purchase. It is important to note that rugs that have a wool foundation, are quite different from rugs with a cotton foundation. These rugs quite often have irregular shape and can lay quite different on the floor than a rug with a cotton foundation. Antique rugs are, due to age, construction, and weaving technique, more delicate than other rugs and should generally be used in areas with less traffic. Generally I sell/ship to North America only. On occasion I will sell internationally but be aware that international shipping can be very costly so inquire before offerding. An additional consideration for international buyers is the Customs charges you might incur.
