An extremely rare miniature Mauchline Ware snuff box in the tartanware finish with a hand painted scene to the front, made by Alexander Lammie of Cumnock, and dating to around the 1st half of the19th century.
The tinywooden box is rectangular in form, with ahinged lid and a foil ? covered interior.
The hinge is the 'hidden' type, with interlocking joints.
The box is covered in a Yellow tartan & the front has a hand painted hunting or riding scene, with a man on a horse,wearing a red coat & top hat and with a whip in his hand, jumping over a stone wall or dyke.
The interior of the lid is stamped LAMMIE / (possibly) CUMNOCK - The makers mark is only partial due to the bubbling of the foil.
Condition : Overall fine for it's age with no splits, repairs & a very good hinge. There is the expected scuffs & rubbing to the covering, particularly at the corners & edges - please see all photos & click to enlarge.
The box measures approx 1 1/4"x 1" (approx 2.6cm x 3.1cm)
