MORE PICTURES AFTER ITEM DESCRIPTION
This well figured walnut veneered striking Vienna regulator wall clock was manufactured by Gustav Becker of Freiburg in Schlesien, Germany. It has a serial number 532297 stamped in to the back plate of the movement along with the Gustav Becker trade mark and the Me'daelle Dor stamp. The serial no dates this clock between 1885 and 1890. The clock has a running duration of 8 days and is in excellent original working condition.
Gustav Becker was born in 1819 and trained as a clockmaker in Germany and Austria. He opened his workshops in Freiburg, Silesia, Germany in 1850. Becker struggled with untrained help at first but won a Golden Medal, the Medaille d’or, at the 1852 Silesia Trade Exposition for design. Becker incorporated that first medal and his initials, G.B., into his trademark. This award gave him the recognition that he needed to attract skilled craftsmen to his workshops. Numerous awards and certificates followed, from trade expos as far-flung as Australia and as close to home as Vienna
The well proportioned case is veneered in walnut which has an excellent original finish along with a nice patina consistent with a well preserved antique. In place of the more usual half round pillars the case has fully turned pillars with carving of a quality not often found on clocks of this type, in particular the Corinthian capitals at the top of each pillar. Other unusual features to the case is the inset panel in the backboard and the carved mask above the dial giving an elegant and stylish appearance to the clock. At the top of the case is a detachable architectural style pediment with strong mouldings, a cresting in the centre and a large carved central finial. The mouldings, finials, door embellishments and applied carvings are all in excellent condition. The levelling screws and brackets are present.
As with all Gustav Becker Vienna regulators the movement is of the highest quality having maintaining power and dead beat escapement with adjustable pallets for accurate timekeeping. The movement is clean and original to the case. It is keeping excellent time and striking reliably. Striking is every hour (once for each hour indicated) and then once for every half hour on a coiled steel gong fixed to the movement mounting bracket. I have included some pictures of the movement at the end of the item description.
The white porcelain dial has Roman numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial ,it is in excellent condition with the exception of a very faint mark on the inner part of the dial near to the number 10,you may be able to see this by enlarging the picture of the dial included after the item description.. The 2 pulleys and the brass cased weights and pendulum are also in excellent condition. The pierced steel hands are of typical Viennese style.
As can be seen from the photographs, although over 100 years old this clock is in superb condition requiring no restoration at all.
