Antique African Ceremonial Dance Wand/ Early 20th Century/ Ashanti - Akan People For Sale
North - Central African Ceremonial Staff or Dance Wand ~ Possibly Ashanti or Akan People ~
Early 20th Century
~ please scroll down for more photos ~
Length - 10" (25 - 3.5" (9 cm)
Fine old carved wood ceremonial dance wand or staff, probably North-Central African, possibly made and used by the Ashanti or Akan Tribal cultures.
Carved from one piece of light colored, medium-hard wood, with a plain undecorated square handle. The end sections, one rectangular and one diamond-shaped, are ornately carved with inscribed, low relief abstracted geometric designs.
The designs are quite beautiful and appear to show the influences of Islamic art. They are quite similar to the decorative carving seen on Ashanti stools and the wood is also the same color, so that may be the correct origin of this piece. However, this piece looks to be of ceremonial use, possibly a dance implement or possibly for spiritual healing.
This object shows advanced wear and patination from long tribal use.
AGE: Early 20th century.
Good condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: Overall wear with softened edges to the carved designs. No losses or restorations. Highly developed smooth, glossy patina overall, with a darkened patina to the crevices of the carving.
HISTORY: Purchased about 20 years ago from an old collection of African art in San Francisco. No further collection history known.
