This is an extremely rare set of high quality antique bookends featuring a Cupid sitting on a ledge reading a book. Circa 1920 by Weidlich Brothers. The Cupid is wearing glasses and is concentrating on the book he has on his lap, there is another book at his feet. His bow is lying beside him. He has wings on his back and shoulder strap holding a sack of arrows. Gorgeous set. Each bookend stands 5 1/2" tall, 6" long, 4 3/4" wide and weighs 2 lbs. 5 oz. (4 lbs. 10 oz. for the pair). The front base is incised with the word 'PHILOSOPHER'. They are in very good condition. This set is made of a white metal with a bronze finish. Weidlich Brothers Manufacturing Company was located in Bridgeport, CT and in business from 1901 until 1950. They made a wide variety of metal arts products. They produced high quality items with excellent finishes. A large amount of their production was in silverplate.
