Antique Art Deco Monkey Reading Bookends Jb Hirsch 1932 Sculptures Metal Darwin:
Extremely rare set of antique bookends featuring a chimpanzee reading a book made of ivorine (early celluloid) by J.B. Hirsch Company. Circa 1932. This fabulous set of antique art deco bookends features a monkey reading a book while sitting on top and beside books. This pair was in response to the then contemporary controversial 'Theory of Evolution' by Darwin which was reflected in many art pieces at the time. Thisvery rare set of bookends are typical of the high quality which has made the products produced by the JB Hirsch Company so sought after by collectors. Each bookend stands 5 1/4" tall, 5 1/4" wide, 3 " deep and weighs 2 lbs. 2 oz. (4 lbs. 4 oz. for the pair). They are in very good condition. The monkeys have no cracks, dents, missing finish. Authenticity is assured as the hallmark of JB Hirsch and the date of production 1932 can be found on the binding of the books stacked beside the monkey. The monkey is casted from white metal with a french bronze finish.
