Overall good condition. Hardcover. Green cloth w/gold gilt lettering. Bumped edges and wear. Slightly cocked.All pages are intact, tanned with some bent upper right corners, light foxing in here and there -throughout, some soiling (mainly, fingerprints). Inked name on brown front end page. Previous owners name penciled in on front end page. Tear on the inside seam/binding on back board.According to Wikipedia, the author, Charles Carlton Coffin was a leading journalist during the American Civil War. Throughout the book, he refers to Garfield as \"Major Garfield\". The biography covers the early years of Garfield\'s life up until his Republican Party nomination for the 20th US Presidential Election, with Chester Arthur\'s nomination for Vice- President. The preface does refer to their term (if elected) would be 4 years beginning in March 4, 1881. Also in the preface, the author mentions that Garfield proofread some pages for this book.This book appears to be the first autobiography of James Garfield, published before the 1880 Presidential election and his assassination the following year.
