Antique Brass Hand Fire Lantern - Empire Hose Company 1 Flushing N.Y. Circa 1856-1905
This lantern is an early piece of FDNY history and belongs in a Fire Museum. This awesome piece of Fire fighter history has been in my family since 1958 when it was given to my Grandfather along with an 1871 Hand Cart he restored for a LI Volunteer Fire Department. My grandfather was personal friends with one of the board members of the former Exempt Firemen’s Association of Flushing N.Y., which was organized May 13th 1897, and Headquartered at 136-61 Roosevelt Ave Flushing 54, N.Y. (See picture of letterhead from the donation a complete copy of the letter will be included with the sale)
This lantern is from EMPIRE HOSE Company 1 FLUSHING N.Y., which was located on Lincoln St. near Main St. FLUSHING N.Y., and was in operation from Jun. 15, 1856 to Dec. 1, 1908 which makes this lantern at least 105 years old. This lantern was manufactured by Gleason & Bailey MFG Co limited New York as indicated by a brass plate I discovered that is located on the inside of the lantern.
What makes this lantern so awesome is all of the great deep etchings that tie it to the early years of FDNY and is a true piece of history that has been in storage for over 55 years.
At the top of the lantern there is the large Brass ring for carrying that surrounds the Gilt Eagle on top. The lantern is 6 sided and surrounded by 59 large red glass beads that make this lantern shine red when lit from within.
Side 1: Etched on the Door in Red glass is "Empire Hose Co. 1 Flushing N.Y."
