Antique Lacquered Brass Jones Improved Type Monocular Microscope C1800
This Superb late 18th Century Jones Improved type microscope is signed on the top of the tube near the eye piece
" W & S JONES 30 High Holborn London" .
William & Samuel Jones , opticians and instrument makers were active in London from 1791 - 1859 .
The microscope in constructed of lacquered brass and sits on a mahogany base with theaccessories draw. It also has its original Pyramid box with workingkey. The barrel nose eyepiece and objectiveis attached to a horizontal limb that sits on the main column, which features a rotating objective disc. Below that is the stage which is focused via rack and pinion and moves up & down the main column. The Plano-concave mirror can also be adjusted by hand and isalso fixed to the main column.
The instrument is housed in its original mahogany case with a working key and original carrying ring. It comes with a near complete set ofaccessories which include four eyepieces / objectives , slide holder , stage mounted bulls-eye lens and stage forceps & bug spike.
The instrument when in use measure's 46cm tall and weighs over 3kg with the case.The instrument is in excellent mechanical condition. Some of the lacquer is worn especiallyaround the stage and there are minor splits to the base . The mirror is in excellent condition and i'm glad to say the instrument has not been polished . Giving it its lovey antique patina.
This rare and exciting find, should appeal to the connoisseur collector of fine English Georgian microscopes by these exceptional opticians and quality instrument makers.
