Antique Bronze Clad Skull Halloween Medical Bookends Armor Bronze Original Paint:
Wonderful bookends depicting a skull atop an old book. This is the SECOND such pair I have listed on - in different finishes.
These were electro-formed (more commonly known as bronze-clad), a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of actual bronze (sometimes copper) was made to adhere to a plaster statue through the chemical process of electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900's to produce decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces but still were affordable by the middle class. On the bottom of one, you can just see a piece of metal sticking out, representing the "wick", by which the piece was suspended in a vat of some electro-plating solution.
One of those companies was Armor Bronze, their customary shield logo shown on the backs. Circa 1920's, early '30s at the latest.
Condition is excellent, no breaks in the cladding, just a few gently mashed corners on the books, and a few minor dents in the skulls. I have not seen this set in a gilt color before, but absolutely believe it is original paint, and almost entirely intact. There is some wear and discoloration from use, and some white-ish looking substance which I think is residue of a cleaning material used by a prior owner.
5 1/2 inches tall; 3 3/4 inches side to side; 5 inches front to back. And pretty heavy at just over 3 pounds EACH PIECE.
Perfect gift for the medical student, practicing doctor or ghoul in your family.
