Antique C19th Century Austrian Cold Painted Bronze Witches Cat, Possibly Bergman:
Here on offer is a wonderful antique Austrian cold painted bronze witches cat, possibly by Franz Bergman, dating to the late 1800s
Franz Bergman was not a sculptor himself as he is often described, instead he hired many anonymous sculptors, hired temporarily by his workshops. At the turn of the 19th/20th century there were about 50 workshops producing Vienna bronzes. ‘Cold painted bronze’ refers to items cast in Vienna, but were made from bronze or spelter. They were decorated with several layers of ‘dust’ paint, this technique has now been lost. The colour was not fired, giving the name ‘cold painted’ and was done by women at home in a cottage industry set up.
This great little character is made to be free standing. He has very chips to the paint. He is skilfully modelled, with his back arched and hair on end. It has ‘geschutz’ embossed on the belly of the cat.
The cat is offered in good antique condition, it measures about 5cm by 5.9cm in height and weighs 52g.
A delightful collectable.
