Antique Chadwick & Carr Co. - Boston, Ma. - 30 Lbs. Hanging Scale - Double Sided:
Antique CHADWICK & CARR CO. - Boston, MA. - 30 lbs. HANGING SCALE with Scoop Pan: Up for sale is an absolutely fantastic Hanging Scale which was manufactured by the Chadwick & Carr Co. of Boston, Massachusetts. Chadwick & Carr were known for their butcher supplies, refrigerators and store fixtures and I can certainly picture this large scale once hanging in a local New England butcher shop. Before I start with the description, please take a movement to view my 'completed listings' where you will find another Chadwick and Carr Hanging Scale that I had come across a couple of weeks back. I photographed that scale in the same barn door and by viewing that other scale I think that it will help give you a better appreciation to the size of this scale which is now listed for sale. This is a very large and very heavy scale - one of the largest that I have discovered. The scale weighs nearly 20 pounds (without the pan), it has a 15 inch diameter across the front of the scale and as it hangs (from the top of the scale to the bottom of the scoop pan) it measures right around 40 inches. This is a double sided scale with identical looking sides. The glass on both sides is in wonderful condition - clean (inside and out) and it is free of any cracks, chips or notable scratches. Every part of the scale appears to be original and the scale is in perfect working condition. There is an adjustment on the bottom of the scale which tares / zeros out the scale accurately and once weight is added to the pan, the lower bar is drawn out showing markings in 10 pound increments up to 30 lbs (the reason that the scale is not zeroed out in the photographs is that because the scale is so large, the pan was slightly resting on the lower half of the barn door). As mentioned, there are two identical sides of this scale. Side #1 is in excellent condition given its age. The dial / face of the scale is very clean with only the slightest areas of browning around the number 5 and 0 (very minimal) and upon close inspection you will see small browning spots however these are very light and they take nothing away from this scale. The numerals are bold, the large arrow is brilliant red without any loss to the paint and the center name logo is near perfect. The bezel around the dial on side #1 and #2 has a mirror like finish, showing no pitting, dents or scratches. Side #2 (picture number 9) has the area of browning on the dial towards the top half and a couple of darkened brown spots on the dial however the dial is not ripped, warped or otherwise damaged. The metal cover that surrounds the scale appears to be chrome (or other polished metal) over brass. In a couple of the photo's, the metal looks to be rusted however there is no rust on this outer metal, it is the brass lightly showing in some areas and this brass has a perfect aged patina. I did not polish the outer metal however if this scale was in a butcher shop (or other grocer) it would have been cleaned often and polished every once in a while which would eventually start taking away the polished metal / chrome finish. Although the majority of the polished metal finish remains, you can see some of the brass showing though in some areas and I've tried to show this in pictures 9,10,11 as I took a couple of the pictures against a plain white sheet of paper however the overall look and appeal of this scale is amazing. There is not any hesitation to the scale when weight is added to the pan and the springs are in excellent condition (no rust or squeaking when pulled or retracted) and the pan is in wonderful condition as well, having no rust, dents or dings in it and its shape has remained in perfect condition. As mentioned above, I haven't used any polish on this scale. I've cleaned the glass and used a clean soft cloth to wipe down the metal. This is a very clean scale that is ready to be used, displayed, or restored back to its original condition and because of its impressive size, this is a scale that will undoubtedly be a centerpiece, a statement piece that will look fantastic where ever it is placed.
