Antique Carved Bog Oak Owl Thimble Holder
Irish * Circa 1890s
antique figural piece is carved of bog oak with lots of detail.
It's in the shape of an owl and still has its original
eyes. Thetop has a space holding a small brass thimble, about
American child's size 1 (11
in diameter). The condition
in round with
no holes, repairs or other damage. The thimble fits perfectly so the
owl must have been intended for a child.
Aside from a fine surface crack on the front, the bog oak is also in excellent condition with no chips or loss and the owl measures 2" high. Thimble owls like this one are shown on p. 193 of Bridget McConnel's book Antique Needlework Tools and also on p. 134 of Thimbles by Edwin Holmes.
