Antique Carved Wood Walnut Case W/ Sterling Silver Child's Thimble * Circa 1870:
Carved Wood Walnut Child's Thimble Holder
English * Circa 1870This little thimble holder is carved of wood in the form of a walnut. It opens in the middle and inside it a tiny sterling silver thimble. The condition of the walnut is excellent with no damage and it closes snugly. It measures 1 1/8" long and it has nice old patina.
The little thimble tests sterling silver and was made prior to 1880, the date English silversmiths were required by Parliament to hallmark small silver items and pay duty on them. The maker's mark for H J. Cooper & Co. is stamped in the engraved band. It is thought that his thimbles were actually made by Charles Horner. It is about an American child's size 2 (11.5 mm diameter opening) and is in fabulous condition with almost no wear. It is lightly gilded with gold.
