Antique Catchers Mitt Early 1900's "sell Brand" Made In Canton Ohio Rare:
This is an extremely rare antique
Sell Brand Catcher’s Mitt made by The Sell Sporting Goods Co in Canton Ohio. It
has the original green cloth patch and is about 10” wide and 10” high. The
patch is in decent condition, but starting to separate on one side. The padding
is still there and the leather is thin and soft. There are scuffs, cuts,
scratches and dirt on this piece, with several wear through spots, and the wrist
strap is almost broken thru. I doubt the lacing holding the glove
together at the edges is original, as I would normally expect it to be leather rather than cloth, but there are not many of these gloves around to compare it to.
History: Thomas Wilson bought out several companies when he took over the operations at Ashland Mfg in 1914 including Sell Sporting Goods for the manufacture of gloves and balls, which dates this glove as 1914 or before. Sell Sporting Goods was located in Canton OH. and was an outgrowth of Sell Horse Goods Co., owned by William Sell. William Sell was the inventor of the innovative wrist strap found on some early Wilson mitts.
This is a very rare opportunity to own a glove by this maker. Don’t pass it up, as it is unlikely you’ll see another one any time soon. See high resolution photos for more and use the magnify feature.
