For sale is an authenticated 3x4 foot Lesghi rug made between 1890 and 1900. (Actual size 49 x 36.25 x 51.5 x 36.) The rug is all wool and low pile and uses a figure eight cotton wrap on the edges. The rug has a serrated leaf and wine glass border and a Turkish symmetrical knot. The Lesghi star is a medallion with an interrupted rosette underneath. The condition is rated ‘good’ with some wear on the edges. At some time in the past, a small wedge was removed to make the rug lay flat. This rug was used as an area rug, not displayed. The rug has been professionally cleaned by a large Oriental rug firm. The colors are still bright and there is no odor. Lesghi or Lezgi rugs refer to rugs made by the Lesghi people of Northern Caucasia in Russia. They fall into the Dagestan carpet category. Lesghi rugs are best known for the star shaped designs found on some of the rugs. This appealing design has had widespread distribution in the Caucasian rug weaving region for over 200 years. Lesghi rugs may have either high or low pile and, in the Caucasian rug tradition, use bold rich colors.
