The last Confederate Soliders were held up here, Captian Orville Jo Shelby and his men wintered in texas between 1864 -1865, they were from Missouri and his brigade was called \" The Iron Division\" In the spring They were order to go to Sheverport La to surrender, but the decide to attack the city to prevent the collapse of the Trans-Mississippi Confederacy but were stopped by the weather, so the headed for mexico instead, stopping on the banks of the chambers creek area south of Chatfield. Near there they made thier last bivouac as a confederate unit, On June the 2nd they lined up for assembly and held what has been called The Last review of the Confederacy.
