Antique Chinese Buddhist Hell Scroll Qing Dynasty

This old scroll depicts the Buddhist Hell ruled by a judge (known as the Yama King).

Diyu is the realm of the dead or "hell" in Chinese mythology

The Underworld Domain is where the souls of the deceased are held accountable for their actions in life and had to submit to sometimes horrible punishments.

The scroll is constructed of what looks like silk on the front supported by 8 panels of handmade paper.

The paper is badly stained and torn near the top of the scroll however the silk front and the rest of the scroll are still strong. The paint is in great condition and is still bright and vivid with no areas of chipping or cracking although there are areas of wear lines from being rolled

Size: 196 x 88 cm
