Antique Chinese Cantonese Carved Cow Bone Faux Ivory Export Brise Fan 1820 Boxed For Sale
For Your Consideration
An Antique Cantonese Carved Ox Bone Faux Ivory Export Brisé Fan dated to around 1820 - In its Original Period-Correct Cardboard Box and with the Monogram "CS"
This lovely fan was made specifically for export to the European market. It is
made of 23 carved and pierced ox (cattle) bone sticks that are connected via the a pure silk ribbon (properly replaced). The two guardsticks are carved with two figures and a dragon. The inner sticks are intricately carved on one side with the usual dream garden figures within a landscape. There are many figures engaged in different activities, e.g. peasants with their tools, peasants carrying food, noblemen seated around a garden table, noblemen in boats, resting under trees. I also discovered a dog, several birds and various sea shells and mussels. Many figures are carrying hand fans and hand screens. There is a centrally placed reserve in the form of a medallion that bears the previous owner's monogram "CS" in black ink?. The fan has a screw rivet with a paste stone on either side. The fan measures approx. 7.25" long and 13" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this
fan in centimeters are 19 cm long and 33 cm wide. The fan is in near perfect
condition. The only flaws I noticed are a few tiny missing background filaments and the tips of some inner blades are ever so slightly warped - noting really (see photos). In the photos it appears as if the first inner stick on the right has a long crack, but it is NOT A CRACK, but the natural grain of the material. The fan comes in its period-correct contemporary red paper covered lidded cardboard box - the box is almost certainly of European manufacture, but many, many early brisé fans came in such boxes. The box is also in excellent condition with scuffs on its corners (see photos).
