This is for an antique Chinese Dehua Blanc de Chine figure of Guanyin, Qing Dynasty, 19th century (1801-1900). Made of fine quality porcelain, with a smooth milk white glaze. The figure is crisply modeled in the form of Guanyin, depicted standing on a lotus leaf decorated support, wearing a long robe with draping folds, adorned with a particularly elaborate network of fine beaded chains and pendants at the chest and skirt, with delicate fingers and toes, her combed hair tied at the top of her head, with two flowing plaits on her shoulders. This figure measures 30.2 cm in height and 8.6 cm in width. It weighs 867 grams. The condition is generally very good, there is a small area of the base re-stuck, two of the lotus leaves re-stuck, and a chip to one finger tip, no cracks or other damage. Please see images.
Note: This figure was made at the Dehua kilns in Fujian province, southern China. This type of white Dehua porcelain became known as 'Blanc de Chine'.
Guanyin is the Compassionate Bodhisattva (literally 'enlightened being'), and came to be incorporated into Chinese religious life, art and material culture as an important figure in the Buddhist pantheon and was the focus of devotional practices aimed at individual salvation.
