Antique Chinese Export Solid Silver Novelty Shape Spice or Pepper Pot by Wang Hing & Co circa 1895
This Antique Chinese Export Spice or Pepper Pot measures approximately 1 7/8 inches or 47 mm tall to the top of its lid and it is just over 7/8 of an inch or 23 mm across the width or diameter of its lower body from side to side.
The spice or pepper pot is made from solid silver in a delightful shape with a threaded upper body and it has a pierced screw down lid, the outer body of the spice or pepper pot has been superbly raised relief and engrave decorated so that it looks like the a flower bud or an asparagus tip, the spice or pepper pot has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram and the side of the upper body and lid have beenimpressed with a set of Chinese export solid silvermarks along with the Hong Kong silversmith or makers mark W H of Wang Hing &Co although these marks are now very faint all as photographed below, I estimate that this spice or pepper pot was made circa 1890 - 1900.
Thecondition is used and near Mint for its age.
The spice or pepper pot has No Dents,No Splits, No Cracks, No Holesand No Repairs that I have found, the pot stands straight, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the lid opens and screws tightly closed with ease although as this spice or pepper pot is a used antique the Chinese silver and makers marks are very rubbed or worn and they are only just visible with a good eyeglass, it has some extremely minor surface wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expectedand a gentle clean would enhance it greatly.Personally I think that this antique Chinese novelty shape spice or pepper pot can still be used today and that it would make a superb additionto any cabinet collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering thatit's around 110 orsoyearsold.
