Antique Chinese Couching Embroidered Phoenix & Dragon Robe Jacket
This antique Chinese gold couching embroidered phoenix and dragon robe coat dates from the 19th century during the end of the Qing Dynasty. It is made of a turquoise blue silk fabric, with red silk sheer woven cut weave sleeves and colorful raised padded satin stitch embroidery work. There are gold metallic thread couching embroidery work dragons, which tiny colored stitches hold the couching work together giving it a contrasting copper appearance. There are a variety of embroidered birds including the phoenix, dragons, bats and waves of water along the bottom. The phoenix and dragon represent the bird and animal kingdoms and are a symbol of the entire natural world. They also signify husband and wife and wedded bliss. This unusual long coat jacket style robe has been constructed and custom made from an antique Chinese Han women's early wrap around style apron wedding skirt, fully lined, with an open front and no closure. The robe measures 43 inches long, with 56 inch hips, a 44 inch waist, 40 inch bust, 17 inch back and 27 inch long sleeves. It is in good condition, with only some slight fading on the sleeve. This is truly a wonderful piece of wearable Chinese art!
