Antique Chinese Golden Dragon Banner Silk Brocade Nobility 4 Claw Dragon For Sale
Offered is a beautiful early silk brocade hanging panel depicting a 4 clawed golden dragon, historically an emblem of the nobility. The central dragon and the surrounding 4 smaller dragons are woven in metallic gold thread on a dark gold satin ground. The dragons and other symbols are enclosed within a woven floral border around three sides. The dragon is beautifully depicted, with a lively, animated facial expression. The panel is 18th century or possibly earlier, and unfortunately the silk has deteriorated significantly, but I do think it could be laid down and restored by a textile conservator. There are numerous horizontal splits across the warp threads, but most of the metallic gold dragon design is intact. Even with the splits the weft threads are largely intact, so there is very little actual loss of material. The banner was longer at one time, and has been shortened and seamed above the dragon’s head. The ground of the upper section is slightly less faded than the lower portion. The banner is backed with the original coarse raw silk, and a wooden bar has been enclosed across the top. Measures 37” (94 cm) x 27” (69 cm).
