Antique Chinese Porcelain Snuff Bottle/ Blue&white Imari Painting/ Silver Mounts For Sale
Antique Chinese Porcelain Snuff Bottle Sterling Silver Cap and Mounts
19th Century
~ please scroll down for more photos ~
Very fine antique Chinese porcelain snuff bottle with later silver cap and mounts.
The sterling mounts have English hallmarks.
Porcelain bottle dates from the 19th century or earlier.
SIZE:
Height (with cap on) - 3" (75 mm)
Diameter - 1 1/2" (38 mm)
This antique Chinese snuff bottle is beautifully decorated with a background of underglaze blue on white porcelain and further decorated with fine painting in overglaze red enamels and gilded designs. In the Japanese Ko Imari taste, but of Chinese manufacture and decoration.
The body is of a traditional shape and has been mounted with English sterling mounts and lid at a later time (circa 1880's), which include a domed lid which fits nicely over the stepped rim-mount, as well as a band at the bottom of the neck. This band has an attached ring, as does the lid, and there is a small delicate chain which holds the lid to the body of the bottle for easy use.
The mounts are signed with the hallmarks of the London silversmiths, "Cornelius Saunders and Frank Sheperd". This particular form of their hallmarks were used in the 1880's and so the bottle was made before that time and then the silver mounts were added in England.
The bottle looks to be quite old and probably dates to the mid to late 1800's or possibly even the late 18th century. The bottom is unsigned and has a very thing even foot with an iron-red rim (see photos). Very high quality
This antique snuff bottle is in excellent condition as shown in the photographs. There are no chips, no hairlines, and only some slight wear to the gold tracery. The silver mounts and lid or top are also in good condition with no dents.
