Antique "civil War Era?" Sword And Scabbard "double Edge":
Antique "Civil War Era"? Sword
double edged first 8" of blade
condition is very good (see pics).
I believe this to be of the civil war era however cannot prove the manufacturer or exact date due to there being no stamp numbers or symbols on the blade or the hilt or hand guard. The overall construction is heavy steel and well made. The blood grove is on both sides of the blade and is 26" overall. The tip of the blade is double edged for the first 8" approx. Still pretty sharp for it's age.
The handle is carved wood with still traces of the original leather grip which is wrapped in twisted wire. Both sword and scabbard are original. Scabbard is steel construction with rings intact.I believe this sword is the same model as described in the downloads in the pictures from the catalog "American Swords" from the Phillip Medicus collection.Measurements are as follows:
overall sword length 40 1/2" (tip to butt of handle)blade length 35" (tip to hilt)sword and scabbard 41 1/2" (overall length)scabbard 36" (overall length)
weight 3 lbs 9 oz. approx (sword and scabbard)
