This mold is one of a large collection we purchased recently.

All the pieces in this collection were used in the George H Yeaton & Son Confectionery Co in Hantsport Nova Scotia.

They were all purchased from the estate of the Yeaton Co by a collector a few years ago. This collector compiled the history below and a copy of that history will come with this mold.

HISTORY OF THE MOLD:

In the 1870's, young George Yeaton arrived in Halifax from New Hampshire to work for the Moirs Chocolate Company as a salesman. In 1886 he started the George H. Yeaton & Son Confectionery Company with a "manufactory" on Station Street in Hantsport, Nova Scotia, at the head of the Annapolis Valley.

From original production in his kitchen, George built his company to become Hantsport's major employer, exporting his candies wholesale throughout Canada and as far afield as the West Indies. Records show that in 1914 he employed 23 men and woman: candy makers, shippers, teamsters, bookkeepers and clerks.

Prominent in the floor plan of the factory and in the minds of those later interviewed who worked there was "The Chocolate Room". Here these chocolate molds produced magical figures--as a company slogan stated--"Candy For All Seasons".

During the 1890's George Yeaton purchased German made tin-coated copper chocolate molds either directly from Germany of through the Eppelsheimer Company of New York City. From the 1880's to the 1950's the Eppelsheimer establishment, a prominent German-American company, was an important North American distributor of molds for the Anton Reiche Chocolate Mold Company of Dresden, Germany.

Tin-coated and silver-plated copper based molds were made only until the late 1890's and around 1900 were replaced by, among others, tin-coated steel molds. The First World War interrupted all such German manufacturing and shipping. Thus during or shortly after the 1914-18 War, the Eppelsheimer Co. (whose spinning top trademark was registered in 1921) started producing molds marked "Made in U.S.A.".

Another German-American family, the T. C. Weygandt Co. also of NYC, in turn became a post-war North American distributor for Anton Reiche molds and began to manufacture molds as well. Among the extant Yeaton molds are ones marked "Riecke Wallbach b. Sackingen" (Germany), "Eppelsheimer" and "Weygandt".

One high point in the year for candy lovers was the Yeaton Company's special Christmas treats including barley candies, called "Clear Toys", putting to double-use some of these molds.

While on his way to Truro to make a delivery, George H. Yeaton passed away quietly from a stroke while sitting on his wagon with the reins in his hand. The Yeaton family continued the business until 1941 when sugar was rationed and no longer available in sufficient quantities. Mr. Lee Johnson purchased and ran the business for the next thirty years. In the early 1970's Yeaton's grandchildren purchased back the company but a fire in 1976 closed for good this almost century-old Hantsport establishment and its beloved "Chocolate Room".

This information was gathered with kind and generous help from the Yeaton family and the Hantsport Historical Society, including an interview with a former Yeaton Co. employee-turned-presentday-historian as well as direct analysis and research of this original Yeaton Co. chocolate mold collection.
