A very early and primitively executed covered wooden box decorated with graphic carved six-petal flowers within a circle, a common design of that early period. This is a truly crude example of early, early-pioneer ingenuity. It is a rough handmade box of original design obviously made with primitive implements to suit a particular need of the maker. The box consists of a \"Conestoga wagon\"-shaped bottom crudely hollowed out to form a 5 3/8\" x 4 1/8\" open carrying space in the 10 1/4\" length of the bottom. Overall measurement is 10 1/4\" long x 4 3/8\" wide x 4 3/4\" high (9 1/4\" to top of the handle). The top opens by sliding on the handle on the left and out of the notch cut in the lid on the right. The handle attaches by being inserted through holes in the body of the box and cut off at the sides. Not sure what wood it is, but the handle appears to be maple. A really primitive and crude design from an early period of pioneer ingenuity.Condition displays its age and tough life. The box remains solid, the handle firmly attached with no major splits but the insect/worm damage is extensive, especially on the back. This box probably survived in the back corner of a barn or other challenging conditions. I tried to take enough photos to illustrate damage but, as I said, being made of such heavy and thick wood it remains solid and is truly a striking survivor of that very early pioneer period. Any previous infestation, however, is long over. I\'m guessing it is probably from New England or Pennsylvania given those decorative carved flowers. Of course that \"Conestoga\" shape could be a hint too - Lancaster? Just a guess. This box is a chance to own a truly early and original museum-quality primitive box being sold with .
