Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug w/Incised Decorations c.1840s

Description: The beer steins made before 1850 are considered \"early\". They are quite rare - at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated.

This beautiful stein was made in the first half of 1800s, it is guaranteed old. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel - a type that was produced for over centuries, from mid-1600s to mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of 18th century. It was relatively inexpensive but robust and was sold in Germany as well as in many other countries including England and American continent.

The stein shows incised decoration - a real primitive artistic representation. The decorations are etched into the clay with a sharp instrument, glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed.

The lid is pewter with five-ring closed type hinge and urn-shaped thumblift - this type of thumblifts was the most common in 1820s - 1840s. By 1850s they completely disappeared.

The stein is in excellent condition with no cracks, lines or chips. There are many manufacturing glitches and impurities, but keep in mind - the stein was produced before the industrial revolution, it was made manually and carries all the signs of rough and not so very expensive common production of the first half of the 19th century. But there is no chips, cracks or repairs. I guarantee the authencity.

The stein is large and impressive - it is 9.5\" tall, 1L capacity.

Reference#:   Condition: Excellent. Year: 1840s Country: Germany Height: 9.5 in.   Materials: Stoneware
