Stunning, interior lockset made by “Mallory Wheeler & Co.” of New Haven, CT during the 1870\'s or 1880\'s. The set consists of 2 bronze knobs, 2 bronze rosettes, 2 bronze keyhole covers, 1 iron mortise lock with bronze face plate and 1 working key, 1 bronze strike plate for the door jamb, and 1 spindle with 2 set screws. All parts except for the key, spindle, screws, and lock body are solid, heavy, thick, cast bronze—not flimsy, stamped/pressed bronze or plated iron.
The spindle (connecting rod) is stuck inside one of the knobs. This is not a flaw, as that is where it belongs, but we just to give you a head\'s up and spare you the effort in case you want to try to remove it.
The set epitomizes the Aesthetic (Eastlake) movement. All bronze parts are embellished with sunflowers, quatrefoils, foliage, and various geometric shapes.
The previous owner must have liked his/her hardware clean and shiny, because we found the parts with only a subtle patina. He/she must have only cleaned the set once or twice, because the details are still very sharp and show few signs of wear.
All parts have the typical nicks and scratches that you would expect to find on 100+ year old hardware. However, there are no breaks, cracks, chips, or gouges. The lock was opened, inspected, and greased to function more smoothly. We made a key to operate the lock, and we could make more for $8/key--email us after the sale if you are interested.
