Antique Emerald Green Glass Thimble Shoe & Sterling Silver Thimble * Circa 1870:
Antique Emerald Green Glass Thimble Shoe
Circa 1870 * English * Sterling Silver Thimble
This little antique shoe is made of pressed glass that has been hand cut & polished around the opening. The front is painted with a butterfly and flowers. The opening is intended to hold a thimble. There are some minor nicks and chips around the opening but the overall condition is good. It measures 2 3/8" long and 3/4" wide.
The sterling silver (tested) thimble has a faceted rim and an engraved band. It was made before English silversmiths were required by law to hallmark (and pay duty on) small silver items. The condition is nice with no holes or repairs. It's about an American child's size 4 (12.5 mm diameter opening). A couple of glass shoes of this shape are shown on p. 106 of Bridget McConnel's book The Story of Antique Needlework Tools and on p. 72 of her book The Story of the Thimble.
