Sterling Silver Filigree Thimble
* Circa 1800
lacy thimble is solid
sterling silver (tested) and
of delicate filigree. It's English and dates to the late 18th or early
19th century. It's a tall thimble and about an
American size 7 (opening
is 14.25 mm in diameter). It has been lightly gilded. Usually these
have no marks at all, but this one has the maker's mark "SM" stamped
inside the top. This mark belonged to Samuel Marshall, of 23 Castle
Street, High Holborn (London). He registered the mark in 1799.
condition is excellent with no loss of filigree and it has no dents or
holes in the top section.
cartouche on the front is not inscribed.
Nerylla Taunton shows this thimble on p. 93 of her book Antique
