Found at an estate sale, this marvelous antique10.6\"x50\" (27x127 cm) framed copperplate engraving shows a profile or skyline of the city-state of Delft in 1729. The engraver was Coenraad Decker and the publisher was Reinier Boitet (1691-1758). Individual buildings are indicated and also shown in a legend on the left. The paper is toned quite brown with age, very wavy (see photos), and has one small puncture near the lower left corner (see 11th photo). It\'s framed with Masonite for backing (see below) but the paper isn\'t bonded to it except possibly at the very edges. These antique panoramas of Delft are sometimes described as signed because they have the names \"Rr. Boitet excu.\" and \"C Decker, fec.\" in the plate, with the C and D of the latter combined to form a distinctive monogram (see 5th and 6th photos).A caption in the upper right reads \"Specificatie van ‘t geene sich in ‘t PROFYL van de STADT DELFT aen de west zyde op doet en vertoont.\" The 10th photo shows the beginning of the word \"STADT\" as viewed through a 10X loupe, making it clear that this is an antique engraving rather than a modern offset lithograph reproduction. As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn\'t able to learn anything about history of this marvelous engraving, which I would guess was framed around 50 years ago. As mentioned above, the frame is backed with Masonite, a strong and very durable hardboard. The molding is attached to the Masonite with staples though the back. Unfortunately some of the staples went in at an angle and their sharp ends stick out through the edges of the molding, creating a finger-pricking hazard. The edges of the paper are held down by the molding. It appears that it would be relatively easy to remove the staples and free the paper from the frame so it can be shipped loosely rolled if the buyer wishes. This would save considerably on shipping charges.Reinier Boitet (1691-1758) was a Delft publisher and bookseller best known for his updated edition of Beschryvinge der stad Delft (Description of the city of Delft), originally published in 1667 by Dirk van Bleiswijk (1639-1681), in which this panorama appears as a fold-out. I would guess that it was also published in a standalone edition because this copy shows no signs of ever having been folded or bound that I can see.Over the years the frame has acquired some minor damage (see photos). This framed engraving weighs 3 lb. 9 oz.
