This is the real thing - an actual net float that was used by fishermen in the North Pacific Ocean! They are becoming harder and harder to find, especially with the original netting attached. They are very collectible and highly desired in nautical and maritime decorations. They don\'t make them like this anymore! Don\'t be tricked by the \"fishing floats\" that were made for the retail trade to sell in tourist gift shops that fool unknowing buyers!

Some sellers and even antique dealers claim these balls were hand-blown by glass blowers but I don\'t think they were. I believe they were made using methods similar to those used for making and mass producing glass bottles in the early days - by pressing the molten glass in a mold, which is a a bit different than hand blown. This authentic Japanese glass ball net float was found in 1973 in an extremely remote area of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. The rope is the same that was on it when I found it on that desolate beach so many years ago. I don\'t know how far it had drifted across the Pacific Ocean, nor how long it had been on that beach in a pile of accumulated flotsam that had been there untouched by anything except wind & waves for many years. It has been with me since and it has seen its share of moving, traveling, and living in different locations!This is a large ball. It measures approximately 40 inches in circumference (with the rope of course) and is about 12 inches in diameter, which is a bit bigger than a regular size basketball. It is the thick , green glass, similar to what old Coke bottles used to look like. The thick glass is in EXCELLENT condition with no cracking, chips, or defects but of course has normal wear. There is also the expected wear on the rope and the float in general but overall this float is in Excellent condition for its age. There are some different kinds of bubbles in the glass, which is normal for these balls. Some collectors think the bubbles make them more desirable and unique. It would be a great addition to an existing nautical collection or an outstanding way to begin a collection.
