(1) Original Painting Signed by Hobbs, This outside measurements are 40.5" x 16.5", the inside dimensions are 11.5" x 35.5" I have seen another painting by this artist, also done with fruit but a little smaller listed for $550, it is stated that this is a watercolor but I rubbed the inside to be sure it wasn't a print and I rubbed the brown area and come out with brown on my finger so I am thinking maybe this is chalk? Again, not an expert so PLEASE ask any questions.
I AM NOT AN ART EXPERT BUT AFTER MUCH RESEARCHI FOUND THATA PARTICULAR ARTIST,GEORGE T. HOBBS, ALSO LESSER KNOW AS GEORGE L. HOBBS, WAS BORN IN PHILADELPHIA, PENN. IN 1846. HE IS BEST KNOWN FORCOASTAL LANDSCAPES AND STILL LIFE. HE LIVED IN PENNSYLVANIA BUT VISITED IN THE HUDSON RIVER VALLEY, NY. SCHOOLS WHERE HE STUDIED ACADEMIE JULIAN AND THE PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY. HIS METHODS ARE LISTED AS PAINTING AND PLEN-AIR PAINTING. THE MEDIUMS ARE OIL AND WATERCOLOR. HE IS REFERENCED IN SEVERAL BOOKS ON ART AND ARTISTS, EXHIBITED AT THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF DESIGN AND THE PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMYAND HIS WORK HAS BEEN SOLD THROUGH SEVERAL sale HOUSES.
I HAVE NO WAY TO AUTHENICATE THIS PAINTING BUT THERE ARE OTHER HOBBSWORKS WITH THE SAME SIGNATURE FOR SALE NOW THROUGH sale HOUSES.
AS YOU CAN SEE BY THE PICTURES THAT THE COLORS ARE WONDERFUL.THE FRAME IS THE SAME AS WHEN I ACQUIRED THE ITEM. IT APPEARS TO BE CHERRY. THERE ARE A FEW SCRATCHES ON FRAMEAND THE CORNERS ARE WORNAS SHOWN BUT IS SOLID AND WELL MADE.THE PAPER ON THE BACK IS TORN.
IT IS A NICEPIECE OF EARLY AMERICAN ART.
