Antique French Bodice Original Damask Gold Silk, Fully Boned Handmade 1870's:
c.1870's original ladies french evening bodice made of damask silk, trimmed in golden yellow velvet. The damasking forms the pattern using a contrast between a design woven in satin weave to be glossy so as to reflect light differently to the plain woven background, making the pattern seem to appear and disappear as the light hits it. The velvet could be silk or cotton or a combination of fibres. Yellow was a particularly fashionable colour of the period with fastening at centre back and hooks and eyelets/ eyes/ bars, hidden by a flap of silk. Original waistband hand sewn against bone casing with makers name and address Maison Gaichet, Robes el Manteaux, 56 Avenue de Breteuil. Paris.
Bodice is in good antique condition with some worn areas underarm.
Dimensions: petite size 18 inch waist, open width 28 inch, length 16 inch.
All original and extremely fine and rare luxurious item of museum quality.
