Antique Georgian Carved Cow Bone Faux Ivory Fan Eventail Ventaglio Abanico 1805:
For Your Consideration
An Antique Georgian (Empire) English, French or Chinese? Carved Ox Bone Faux Ivory "Frozen Lace" Brisé Fan dated to around 1800/1805
DescriptionI remain unconvinced that these types of fans were made in China. I strongly suspect that this was made in England or France. The fan is made of carved/pierced ox (cattle) bone sticks that are connected via a pure silk ribbon (properly replaced). Please note that the fan is not white, but cream/light yellow in colour (naturally patinated). The design shows small highly stylised flowers, foliage and swirls. It is of a type that is frequently described as "frozen lace". Very pretty indeed.
The fan measures approx. 6.75" long and 12.5" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this fan in centimeters are 17 cm long and 31.5 cm wide.
The fan is in very good condition. The only fault I could find is a small missing section on the left guardstick - this must have happened a long time ago, it is not a fresh break (see photos). If one looks very long and hard at the fan, one can spot two tiny, tiny breakouts on the right side, but these are nearly invisible and are just mentioned for total accuracy (see photos).
