Antique Georgian Chinese Paper & Faux Ivory Fan Fächer Eventail Ventaglio 1790 For Sale
For Your Consideration
A Large Antique Georgian Eastern-Inspired (Chinese) Carved Faux Ivory Sticks and Handpainted Paper Leaf Fan dated to around 1760 (sticks) and 1790 (leaf)
This is another fan that has me puzzled. It was certainly made for the English market, but where China, France or even England? The one thing I am quite certain about is that the sticks date to around 1760 and that the leaf was added in around 1785/1790. The fan is made of lovely carved and pierced faux ivory sticks (please note that the sticks are not white, but cream in colour - not yellow as shown in the photos taken on the white background) and a double beige paper leaf. The sticks are carved on both sides with figures in Buddhist-like costume. The guardsticks show a figure carrying fruit and a dog or similar animal. The leaf is embossed with a type of herringbone pattern and handpainted in the Indian style with flowers in gold and black/dark brown on the front and with similar flower and gold dots on the back. The fan measures approx. 11.5" long and 20.5" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this fan in centimeters are 29 cm long and 52 cm wide. This fan is in good condition for its age, but someone had used cellotape to repair a tear on the front left upper corner of the leaf and another on the back - the tape is gone, but the darker adhesive stains remain, as they always do when cellotape is used (see photos). I cannot say it often enough: PLEASE DO NOT USE CELLOTAPE ON A FAN, EVER! The top edge of the leaf has a few areas of very small losses, the first fold on the right side has a small hole and there is a short split in two folds at the top edge (almost invisible) (see photos). The sticks are in very good condition (see photos).
This fan will be sent in a sturdy poster roll. Packaging and postage WITH INSURANCE, TRACKING AND REGISTRATION to the UK via
