Antique German Snow Baby Skiing Boy Near Chimney Container Pic 7.64 For Sale
We do not know with any certainty what these container pieces were meant to display. They were called "planters' when I began collecting snow babies. Maybe some were used as that way, but I think it is more likely that they were used fortemporary displays -- fresh or dried flowers or small decorative branches. They they could also serve practical purposes -- a place for toothpicks, candy or cigarettes. Perhaps, and only perhaps, the designers thought that giving a decorative item a more practical use could be a selling point. (I should have been in merchandising.) So when the husband asked "What, another figurine?" The wife could answer "Dear, we needed a toothpick holder for the table." (Or a marriage counselor.) Perhaps... All examples of this piece I have seen have this soft, washed-over look. The chimney shaped container made me wonder if he is skiing on a roof, but the tree is so close by. This example is free of chips, cracks and other damage, but be certain to see what appears to be a firing flaw where the bottom of the boy's sweater meets the chimney. This would have happened because the porcelain is thicker in that area and would have heated up and cooled more slowly in the kiln. When you see a porcelain firing flaw, look to see if that could be the cause. 3.5" I will return your purchase price if you are not happy with your purchase. Please ask any questions you have before you offer. I will combine purchases for shipping, but if you plan to offer on more than one piece, please do not pay until you have finished buying or until you want me to mail pieces. Maximum holding time about 4-5 weeks. Otherwise makes combining very difficult.
