Antique German Solid Silver Rococo Christening Spoon Nuremburg C.1770:
Fine and rare example of an antique, solid silver, German christening spoon made in Nuremburg c.1770 in the Rococo style.
As can be seen in the photos the spoon has rococo decoration to the back and front of the handle and the back of the bowl. It is clearly marked with the Nuremburg town mark (N) an illegible maker’s mark and a date letter (possibly an “A” for 1766/9); there is also a burin zigzag from the assay masters test.
The spoon is in good condition with no damage or repair, only reasonable wear commensurate with its age. The tip of the spoon is not worn.Any discolouration is caused by reflection of light and mediocre photography.
Length; 195mm (7.7inches). Weight; 34.1 grams (1.1 troy ounces)
Photos of two very similar Nuremburg spoons can be found on page 82 of “Eight Centuries of European Knives, Forks and Spoons” by Klaus Marquardt. Published by “Arnoldsche” 1997.
