Antique German Sterling Silver Go To Bed Match Or Vesta Night Light Box C. 1900:
Rare Victorian 1900 H'm Hanau Sterling Silver Novelty Mandolin Shape Go To Bed or Vesta Night Light
This Antique Miniature Mandolin measures approximately 3/4 of an inch or 20 mm across the width of the hinged top from side to side by just under 1 1/2 inches or 37 mm across the widest part of its lower body from side to side, it is 7/8 of an inch or 22 mm deep from the back of the lower body to the strings bridge on the front and the mandolin or musical instrument is 4 5/8 inches or 118 mm in length from the top of the lid to the base of its body.
The Go To Bed or Vesta Night Light is made from sterling silver in the novelty form of a miniature mandolin or stringed instrument that has a three section piano hinged lid on the top of its body and the lid opens to reveal an internally fitted tubular shaped recess that is designed to hold a lit match or Vesta so that the miniature mandolin can be used as a night light or Go To Bed as these items are commonly known as, the outer body has been wonderfully raised relief and engrave decorated with scrolls, flowers and foliage on the front and the back of the body has a raised relief and engrave decorated garden scene of a cherub or angel that is playing a mandolin to a dove that is perched on a fence, this scene is within a decorative scrolled foliate and shell like outer border and the mandolin still has its original sterling silver wired strings on the front, the mandolin is complete with its original metal stand and it has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the back of the body has been impressed with the German Hanau silversmith or makers marks of B. Neresheimer & Söhne who were founded in 1893 and the back of the lid has been impressed with English 925 standard sterling silver imported item hallmarks from the London assay office that include the date letter e for 1900 again as photographed below.
Thecondition is used and Excellent for its age.
The miniature mandolin has NoDents, No Splits, No Cracks. No Holes and No Repairs thatI can find, the mandolin is straight, the definition and decorationis crisp, the hinge is working perfectly, the lid opens and closes tightly with ease, the Hanau maker and English silver hallmarks are still clearly legible although as this is a used antique novelty go to bed night light one of the silver strings has come away from its post and the mandolin has some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique novelty go to bed night light could still be used today and that it wouldmake a superb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering that it's over 110 years old.
This Extremely Rare Late Victorian Hanau Sterling Silver Novelty Mandolin Shape Go To Bed or Vesta Night Light dated 1900 is one of several piecesof antique and collectable silver that I have also listed.
