~~Description: We are very pleased to be offering this rare antique 1890's to early 1900's Gunthermann of Germany tin windup toy Black African American Banjo Player that is still in very good working order! This is toy that has stayed sound and intact for all these years, plus still has a good working windup motor, and looks very cool when running. Be sure to check out photo's closely, and read entire listing! The toy was made by Gunthermann Toys of Germany, the only marking is on the windup key and all I can read is GM, the toy appears to have all the parts but is sold as you see it for that area. The toy measures about 6.75" tall, he is sitting on a chair, and when the windup is running, he strums the banjo with his right hand while both the feet will move up and down like jigging, plus his head bobs as well. So he really is working pretty well. The toy has obvious loss of finish or paint but still has enough color in spots to know what the true colors were, plus has areas where the finish is much better like his head and banjo. But there are spots where the under tin shows bright where the paint is missing, so be sure to check photo's closely since they show him well. If you handle him some, there is color that will come off easily since there is a lot of crazing and ageing to the finish.
The parts are all intact well, there are numerous soft bends or unevenness in various spots, but found only one minor spot where there is a very small, partial crack or split in the tin which is where the neck meets the round part of the banjo. That area has minor unevenness but nothing bad at all, and tried to show the spot in Photo No. 5. So he has also stayed sound overall even with some soft uneven spots that really do not take away from his great look at all. The main seam of the body remains in good shape, the head seam has a small gap in the front which is pretty normal, I did not find any repairs, repaint or fixing, there is of course normal wear to joints or connections but still holding together well, the windup motor and parts are all connected well with main connection under chair being very good, the gears look very good for their age and are not slipping, windup action is pretty smooth overall, with key and fly wheel parts being good. So fun to have a toy of this age that works so well. Really believe you will like the Banjo Player Man well as he is loaded with super display and very fine overall quality!
Be sure to check out the photo's very closely, and email with any questions before the last day!
